Education
Our lab provides both postgraduate education and professional training
Founded in 2003, our programme was the first postgraduate Lighting Design course in Asia. Through its holistic approach, our programme focuses on the integration of design, creativity and lighting technologies. We attract students from architecture, design, and engineering.
Core courses in our Lighting Design MSc Programme include Art & Science of Light; Lighting Design for the Interiors; Lighting Design for the Exteriors. Daylighting Design and Innovation & Luminaire Design are optional. Elective courses can be chosen from other majors such as Design Management.
For more information please contact: sura.cha@mail.kmutt.ac.th or visit us.
Our MSc requires 36 credits and can be completed within 1.5-2 years (up to 5 years). All classes are in English, and usually scheduled in the evening & Saturday.
You are required to hold a bachelor’s degree, have an English proficiency test, and preferably have a minimum 2 years of work experience in design-related or lighting fields.
To graduate, two options are 1) 6-credit Special Project or 2) 12-credit Master Thesis, recommended for those who will pursue an academic career or involve in advanced R&D in lighting-related fields.
Understanding how people experience and interact with the lit environment is the key to our holistic approach. You will learn from evidence-based design, current research as well as hands-on experiments, field trips and lighting workshops. Experienced lighting professionals are regularly invited to share their cases with you and to take part in design project consultations. Through our focus on the integration of design, creativity and lighting technologies, you will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to create high-quality, sustainable and innovative lighting solutions.
Exterior Lighting Design class field trip to We-Ef Lighting, our long-term partner in education and research.
(Thanks to We-Ef, khun Prabphol, Khun Korn, and Khun Somchai – our first lighting alumni, for your presentation and impressive demo)
A field trip to Mahidol University to learn about the EEG (brain waves measurements) as part of Art & Science of Light class. We experimented to see the impact of listening to relaxing music VS both music and coloured lights.
(Thanks to Prof. Dr. Vorasith & the team and Ajarn Kom Wongsawat)
Through our collaborations with leading international universities, our students take part in design workshops, symposiums and academic exchanges. Our partner institutions include: California Lighting Technology Center, UC Davis (USA); Kyoto Institute of Technology (KIT) & Tokai University, Japan; University of Applied Sciences: Technology, Business and Design, Wismar, Germany.
Together with professional organizations, particularly the Illuminating Engineering Association of Thailand (TIEA), we develop lighting design guidelines and provide short courses and training (CPD) for building designers and engineers. We also collaborate with The Illumination Engineering Laboratory, KMUTT to provide in-house training on specific topics to suit your organization’s objectives such as R&D for lighting products. Examples of short courses:
LD01: Lighting Fundamentals for professional (2019)
A postgraduate course for professional (2020)
Luminaire Design: Technology meets creativity (2014)
